JOSS WHEDON ABOUT SPIKE
Jeff: So when did you realize that Spike was more than just a villain?
Joss: Pretty much when James Marsters auditioned for it. Um, Spike was ya know, Spike was somebody that I loved conceptually and then ya know, James just brought and then kept on bringin'. So, it just, it was a pretty gradual process but it was always happening.
Jeff: A unique transition in that character from just a villain to almost the typical anti-hero. And yet never completely there.
Joss: Well, as a villain he was, ya know the Master that we started with was a straight up villain like, his belief system was just evil. And what was fun about Spike was, I said ok great and, and Mark, Mark Metcalf did a wonderful job, but now we need a villain who, that we can relate to in the way that we're relating to our other people, so that thematically they can become useful. So to introduce this guy who is clearly 'oh I'm such a bad ass' and then have him very tenderly in love with another vampire, so from the very beginning the idea was well he's not just, ya know a cardboard. He's, he's, he's gonna have levels to play. Um, how many I didn't at the time realize, but ah, in a way he, he really didn't change that much. Ah, he's a character that I always liked a little bit more than Angel because --
Jeff: He's got more of an edge.
Joss: He was more evolved, though. He had more of an edge, but at the same time ya know he was, ya know he chose to have a soul.
Jeff: Sure.
Joss: Ya know he ah, he learned from his mistakes and he um, Angel was kinda the classic Lestat puffy shirt, ya know...
Jeff: Right.
Joss: Um, and ah, and Spike was sort of the new mod rebellion against that, so I ah, I like that character. I always, I always thought he was a good guy even when he was a bad guy.
Jeff: Bad boy though, chicks love bad boys.
Joss: They do, they do. If they loved bad dancers the way they loved bad boys I would have been like, whoo.
Jeff: You would have been writing that.
Joss: Oh yeah.
Jeff: So it was an easy decision to bring him from Buffy over to Angel.
Joss: Um, the WB said they would not renew Angel unless we brought him over, so yeah it was a very easy decision.
Jeff: Really? Oh.
Joss: Um, and it was also an easy decision creatively, yes. We were, it was, and the best decision because we had a great ensemble on Angel um, but Spike and Angel's history meant that he and David played off each other in a way that nobody could, male or female and, ya know, David did some of his best work because he was in the room with James and Spike and Angel just... you think it's a banjo act and a banjo act but it's really not, they're so different.
Jeff: Instant conflict and yet great comedic moments.
Joss: Yeah. The two of them were so funny together.

Quando hai capito che Spike era molto di più che un cattivo?
Praticamente quando James Marsters ha fatto l'audizione per il personaggio. Spike era qualcuno che amavo concettualmente e James l'ha portato in vita. E' stato un processo graduale, ma è successo sempre.
Un personaggio che passa in modo unico dal cattivo al tipico anti-eroe, senza mai arrivare lì completamente.
Bene, il cattivo era per esempio il Maestro, che aveva un sistema di valori totalmente cattivo. Abbiamo introdotto Spike come cattivo che fosse rapportabile al pubblico nel modo in cui sono rapportabili i personaggi, così che tematicamente potesse diventare utile. Così abbiamo introdotto questo personaggio "Bad guy" che era romanticamente innamorato di un altro vampiro, cosicché il personaggio potesse avere più livelli su cui giocare. Ed in qualche modo Spike non cambia così tanto. L'ho sempre amato un po' di più rispetto ad Angel -
E' molto più sul filo del rasoio.
Lui era molto più evoluto, molto più sul filo del rasoio e sceglie di avere un'anima.
Spike impara dai suoi errori. Angel era più un Lestat in camicia merlettata, Spike ha una sorta di ribellione verso questo, era un bravo ragazzo anche ai tempi in cui era un cattivo ragazzo.
Cattivo, comunque. Le ragazze amano i cattivi.
Li amano. Se amassero i cattivi ballerini come i cattivi io sarei stato "whoo!"
E' stata una decisione facile portare il personaggio da Buffy a Angel.
La WB disse che non avrebbero rinnovato Angel se non avessimo portato Spike là, quindi sì.
Veramente?
E' stata una decisione facile anche a livello creativo, comunque. E' stata la decisione migliore perché avevamo un grande gruppo in Angel, ma la storia di Spike e Angel comportava che David e James dovessero interpretare i ruoli in un modo in cui nessun altro poteva, David ha fatto del lavoro migliore perché era in una stanza con James e Spike e Angel ... tu pensi che sia la stessa recitazione (NdK: banjo act l'ho tradotto così) ma non la è, loro sono molto differenti.
Subitaneo conflitto e grandi momenti commedy.
Sì. Loro due sono così divertenti assieme.

....Dopo aver letto....mi vengono ancora di più le crisi...contro quest'uomo che odio/amo....ma cazzarola, se amavi così tanto Spike..poteva dargli un finale senza morte in buffy, diciamo una sorta di happy end...per noi spuffy convinte!....o se proprio doveva farlo finire come effettivamente l'ha fatto finire, mettici un episodio in Angel dove decide di andare da Buffy per dirle che lui ...c'é...e farci sognare quel loro amore che tanto ci nutre....invece NO!...Lui ha tarpato le ali a questo amore grande......Io non capisco queste scelte sadomasochistiche !...Ma'....e sinceramente che nei fumetti adesso l'abbia reintrodotto poco me ne faccio! . -

mmhhhhh.. perchè nelle interviste james dice sempre il contrario?? XDDD LOL
JM dice che joss non amava il personaggio di spike, ma che l'ha tenuto per fargli fare la funzione di cordelia (cioè dire a buffy che sarebbe morta e che non avrebbe combinato nulla di buono), quando lei finì nello spin off di angel.
cosa che però non funzionava, perchè non poteva muoversi di giorno e stare vicino alla gang tutto il tempo, quindi quella funzione andò ad anya.
dice che joss non voleva far innamorare buffy di un altro vampiro, dopo angel, perchè per lui i vampiri erano fondamentalmente qualcosa di cattivo e malsano. e che infatti già lo sviluppo della storia con angel gli era stato suggerito da david greenwalt.
insomma, a sentir parlare james non sembra che joss avesse tutto questo affetto per il suo personaggio, come invece joss vuol farci credere!!
probabilmente la svolta spuffy gli è venuta leggendo le aspettative dei fan, di cui joss si è sempre informato, oppure dagli altri autori.
a chi devo credere? a joss produttore che cerca di abbuonarsi i fan o ai retroscena che racconta james?
james racconta pure di aver proposto uno spin off su spike ma che joss non l'abbia nemmeno preso in considerazione perchè aveva già creato quello su Angel.
E joss mi viene a dire che ha sempre prefito spike ad angel? ma ci piglia per il culo?
